CRITICAL BOTTLENECK: The NIF and AIMA Appointment. You cannot open a bank account or sign a house contract in Portugal without a NIF (Tax Number). Furthermore, once you arrive, you must convert your visa into a Residence Permit via AIMA (formerly SEF). AIMA is currently facing massive backlogs, so your entry visa often includes a pre-booked appointment date; do NOT miss it.
1. University Admission & MOFA Apostille
Month 1-4 (Dec - March)
Duration: 12-16 Weeks
Status: Preparation
- Apply to Portuguese universities (e.g., University of Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, Nova).
- Upon acceptance, pay the 'Propinas' (Tuition Fees) to get the official 'Matricula' (Enrolment letter).
- Legalize your educational documents: HEC/IBCC Attestation followed by MOFA Apostille.
- Get a Police Character Certificate (PCC) and get it Apostilled by MOFA (valid for 90 days only).
Critical Points:
- apostille: As of 2026, Pakistan is a full member of the Apostille Convention. You no longer need the 'Red Seal' super-legalization from the Portuguese Embassy; a MOFA Apostille is sufficient.

2. The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal)

4. VFS Global Appointment (D4 Visa)

Status: Visa Submission
- Book an appointment at VFS Global (Islamabad, Lahore, or Karachi).
- Submit the D4 Visa application: Passport, Enrollment, Bank Statement, PCC (Apostilled), Insurance, and Accommodation.
- The visa fee is approx. €90 (payable in PKR).

5. The 120-Day Entry Visa

6. AIMA Residence Permit Card
